Manufacturers who use one-piece bars frequently photograph that section deliberately — it's a selling point they know buyers who've been burned will look for.
- Read the assembly steps or watch the assembly video. This is the most reliable tell. If the crossbar arrives as two pieces that connect in the middle during assembly, it's not one piece — regardless of what the description implies. If the rail comes out of the box as a single length, you have your answer.
- Check the box dimensions. A one-piece crossbar can't be shorter than the rack is wide, so the shipping box has to accommodate the full length. A suspiciously compact box for a wide rack usually means the rail splits.
